| Abstract: | End 14th Century - Founded by Parameswara, a Hindu Price from Sumatra. Embraced Islam in 1404 and established Malacca as an opulent emporium. 1511 - Captured by the Portuguese who ruled Malacca for the next 130 years, thus ending the era of the Malacca Sultanate. 1641 - The Dutch ousted the Portuguese and ruled Malacca for 154 years. 1824 - Malacca was handed over by the Dutch to the British in exchange for Batavia. British rule lasted until 1957 (except for Japanese occupation during WWII) when it was granted independece as part of a new nation, then called Malaya. 1957 - Independence of the Federation of Malaysia. |
