Abstract: The electrical machinery industry grew at an average rate of 13.3% per annum during the last decade. It is expected to be the growth leader among the manufacturing industries in the FMP with an average annual growth rate of 15%. Within this industry electronics recorded high rates of growth in exports of 69% per annum. The export value of electrical machinery including electronics accounted for 1.8% of total earnings from the manufacturing sector in 1970 but increased to 37.4% in 1980. In the field of employment too, on the basis of projected growth of 10% per annum, employment in the manufacturing sector is expected to grow at 5.9% per annum providing about 31% of total new employment. Its share in total employment will increase from 15.8% in 1980 to 18% in 1985. A major portion of this growth is expected to come from the expansion of the electrical industry. The above statistics indicate the high expectations of continued growth and expansion placed upon the manufacturing sector in general and the electrical industry in particular under the FMP. In order to meet the above high expectations the electrical industry must take note of the priority areas of the FMP and gear its activities to meet the challenges.
