Abstract: In the language of wine connoisseurs, 1986 is not a good year. It has been for the most part, a period of dwindling tourist influx, decreasing hotel occupancies, and room rates. An overall gloomy picture for the hotel industry in Malaysia with only a brief glimmer in April when we hosted the PATA Conference and welcomed close to 2000 delegates. It is time for objective reassessment, identification and solution of problems facing the industry. Most of all, it is time for tightening the proverbial belt and employing more aggressive marketing strategies.
