Abstract: Present problems Now, before we can speak of alternative social lifestyles or alternative development, we should of course find out what is wrong with existing lifestyles or practices. The major problem which I think we face is that we have got our concept of development mixed up, not only in Malaysia but in develop- ing countries as a whole also. The theory of development which we have adopted arose from the West. Very briefly, it states that Third World countries are poor because they lack modern technology. If they invest enough money on techno- logical growth, the economy will grow fast. The faster the growth of economy, the greater will be our development, and people will stop being poor.
