Abstract: This paper analyses the current status, challenges, opportunities and prospects in the Malaysian wood-based industry. Relevant major international forestry issues such as sustainable forest management, are summarised. The paper proposes a vision for the optimal development of the industry as a globally competitive one, utilising to the full its strengths and comparative advantage. Policy thrusts and strategies necessary to catalyse the attainment of such a vision are suggested. The strategies encompass programs for greater synergy and value-adding throughout the wood based industry sector. Measures to develop the sector into a full-fledged cluster is proposed in line with the ongoing cluster based planning for a Post- Industrial Master Plan program of industrialisation. The paper concludes that if current and prospective challenges are met with appropriate planning and strategies, the wood-based sector can sustain itself as a viable and globally competitive industry, which can contribute significantly to Malaysia's economy over the long term. The sustainable development and enhancement of the resource base is a prerequisite for such success.
