Abstract: The production of atmospheric ozone, particularly over tropical latitudes is discussed in terms of simple photochemistry. The natural variations found in the amount of ozone in the atmosphere with season and latitude are described. This natural variability is used to demonstrate the difficulty experienced when trying to estimate significant longer term trends. Examples of ozone variations at mid-latitudes, thought to be the result of man-made changes in the atmosphere are discussed.
