Abstract: Sejarah telah mencatatkan satu kenyataan bahawa "the Pilipinos at the point of contact with the Spaniards had the culture that was basically Malayan. They had written languages belonging to the Malayo-Polynesian family, which they used not only as media of daily communications, but as vehicles for literary expression." Katanya, The long Colonial experience under various foreign masters made the Pilipino critics mentally phlegmatic and at best miseducated. Critical thinking was never tolerated during the three centuries of Spanish colonialism. Instead, the Filipino mind was nurtured with religious piety and the catechism of submission and indolence. The latent creativity of the Filipino was limited to the decorative and imitative, his education essentially recitative - a process more suited for monkeys and parrots rather than humans.
