Abstract: The objective of this paper is analyzing the effects of conductive armour tape (CAT) on the operation of stress grading system (SGS) in inverter-fed medium voltage motors. Electric field and heat transfer analysis models which are set up in COMSOL multi-physical program are utilized to conduct this analysis. The nonlinear response of semiconductive tape (SGT) is taken into account in these models. The obtained results show that CAT has an important role in the stress-releasing process of SGS. Moreover, this analysis becomes a fundamental background for the improved design of SGS under inverter source condition. A new structure of CAT is proposed and demonstrated to be effective in improving the operation of SGS.
