Abstract: Malaysia's socio-economic transformation to become a fully fledged industrial nation is usually associated with the post-independence period, with an accelerated pace of growth from the 1970s. Nonetheless, its beginnings belong to the era under colonial rule. This paper is an attempt to ascertain the applicability of some of the major questions raised in the literature regarding the process of industrialization in the pre- independent era.
