Abstract: | The basic premise for undertaking this IRPA research project is that students in Malaysian tertiary institutions of higher learning are not autonomous and self-directed in their learning style or approach. Thang's doctoral study (2001) further reveals that distance learners lack awareness of what is involved in language learning and the processes of language learning. Koo (2003) argues that r:,1alaysian students at tertiary institutions tend to display submissive literacy especially in high-risk academic interactions, where convergence appears to provide benefits. This paper reports the pilot study of this research project undertaken to investigate the learner characteristics of Malaysian on-campus university students through a questionnaire survey. The purpose of this survey is to gain a better understanding of Malaysian learners' needs in order to develop an online English for Specific Purposes (ESP) programme that is more appropriate to their needs. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were used to analyse the results of the questionnaire. The quantitative component of the questionnaire investigates the learners' readiness for autonomous learning. The qualitative component explores learners' profiles and needs in terms of learner identities, literacies and contexts with a view of accommodating them in the design of the on line materials. The findings of the study will contribute towards the development of Malaysians who are autonomous, critical, competitive and capable of meeting with changing academic and professional needs. |
