Keywords: Speech anecdotes
Philosophy
Issue Date: 1951
Notes: The author of the work of which we offer a French translation is the polygraph Aba 'Utman 'Amr ibn Bahr al-Gahiz, whose fame has not yet exceeded the borders of the Muslim world and the limits of Orientalist circles, but who deserves, in more ways than one, to take his place among the great writers of humanity. Let us simply recall for the benefit of non-Arabic readers, that Gahiz was born in Başra around the year 160-776-777 and that after having spent in Baghdad, with the greats of the empire, part of his long existence, he died in his native city in 255-868. His works, very numerous and varied, represented much more than the sum of the knowledge of an honest man of that time, but they are largely lost; his vast erudition, his gifts as a writer, thinker, observer and painter of society are nevertheless visible in the works that have been preserved: a few pamphlets of living interest and three large works accessible now thanks to recent and serious editions: the Book of Animals (Kitab al-bagawan) in seven volumes, the Book of Exhibition and Demonstration (Kitab al-bayan wa-l-ta by in) in three volumes and the Book of the Misers (Kitab al-buhala') in one volume
