Abstract: | Recognition of the significance of the early years has heightened interest and support for early childhood programs. Conclusive research demonstrate that high-quality, developmentally appropriate early childhood education programs produce short and long-term positive effects OR children's cognitive and social development. While there is great potential for producing positive and lasting effects on children, this potential will not be achieved unless the programs meet the highest standards of quality. Effective educational planning for young children takes into account knowledge of human growth and development. The learning principles that guide this planning include: that children learn as total persons emotionally, socially, physically, and intellectually; that children learn through active involvement exploring, playing, manipulating, and problem-solving; children learn through content therefore attention should be given to methods, emotional climate, environment, and teacher-adult interaction. The Malaysian Preschool National Curriculum focus on quality programs for holistic growth in children's intellectual, social, emotional and physical development. The curriculum also delineates the content, skills and values that children are to learn and what they should be able to achieve. This paper will discuss the importance of teaching mathematics and science in early childhood education. The state of implementation and ongoing issues will also be highlighted. |
