Abstract: | Seen from Indonesia, we had a change of regime in 1966 and the new leadership wanted first of all peace with the neighbors and with world to rebuild a shattered economy. The new regime was also staunchly anti - communist and did not want to close its eyes for the common threat. But for Indonesia the peace and development motive was probably more important. The ASEAN policy was part of a broader framework to mobilize the requirements for economic reconstruction, which include the cooperation of western countries and Japan in an aid consortium, encouragement of foreign investment, and last but not least, reversing of the old stance of confrontation with neighbors |
