Abstract: This paper proposes the use of sketch-based interaction technique for navigation in a complex virtual world. This technique allows user to draw the intended path directly on the scene, and user will automatically be brought to move along the path to the destination. By using this technique, user can specify not only the goal position, but also the route to take and the camera direction at the goal with a single stroke. Sketching has been widely employed in modeling but very few have investigated its use in navigation. Previous implementation of this technique in limited to navigation in a small and simple environment. The research aim is to investigate the use of this technique in a cluttered virtual environment with collision detection turn on. The system architecture of sketch-based technique is described and software implementation plan is highlighted.
