Abstract: The aim of this study is to synthesize roselle-based skin patch from roselle plant (hibiscus sabdariffa). The skin patch is made using hydrogel which are chosen from various substances; gelatin, agar powder, com starch and sago starch. The best substance for the hydrogel is chosen through observation and comparison of their physical properties. The hibiscus sabdariffa calyx is extracted and inserted into the hydrogel using a cross-linker. Its efficiency is determined by the swelling test and their swelling percentage is calculated. Further characterization is made using FTIR and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to examine the roselle-based hydrogel physicochemical properties. Results obtained showed that this new material has a high potential to be used as biomaterial in pharmaceutical and medical purposes.
