Ubi gadong (dioscorea hispida) as a natural pesticide spray

Abstract

The extract of Dioscorea hispida which contains Dioscorine was used in producing natural pesticide sprays which is to be used in reducing the population of housefly from the early stage; killing the larvae or maggots. The extract was first prepared in different concentrations by solving it in water. They were then tested on Musca domestica larvae to determine if it was effective in killing them. The results obtained were positive as all concentrations tested successfully killed the larvae after 24 hours except the most diluted concentration of 3.4375. The optimum concentration, one which can kill effectively with the lowest concentration is determined to be 6.875 mg/ml. Based on the research carried out, we produced a natural pesticide spray and we hope our product can be commercialised as it is a good alternative instead of using chemical pesticide spray which could lead to pollution and health problems not only towards human, animal, but also the nature as a whole.
