Abstract: The Piperaceae family comprises about 1000 to 2000 of the species that are wide(r distributed in tropical and subtropical area. In this study, the ethanolic extracts were used to evaluate the cytotoxic activity on human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and non- malignant Chang's liver cell lines by using MTT assay. The ethanolic extracts from eight Piperaceae family were randomly selected. Results showed that Piper sarmentosum exhibit higher cytotoxicity activity with the IC50 value at 12.5 ug/ml. on HepG2 cells, whereas the lowest was 21.9 ug/ml. compared to other species that have been analysed. On the other hand, there are no cytotoxicity activity that could be induced by the extracts. All the lC50 valuesfor non-malignant Chang's liver cell line were greater than 30 ug/ml. respectively.
