The effects of Rosa damascena extract on sperm quality and histology of testis in male rats

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Rosa damascena on sperm quality, and testis histology of male healthy rats. Thirty-six healthy adult male Sprague-dawley rats were divided into four groups; each group containing eight rats. Group 1 which is the control group was force fed with corn oil once a day while the other three groups were force fed with the hexane extract of Rosa damascena dissolved in corn oil at 5, 10, 20 mglkg body weight respectively. After 45 days testis and epididymis of each rat was obtained. Sperm countfrom epididymis showed that the Rosa damascena extract increase sperm count up to 61% compared to the control. There were no significant changes in testis and cauda weight, and also for diameter of seminiferous tubules. The lumen of seminiferous tubules for rats treated with Rose damascena extract showed that it was full of germ cells compared to the control group. The hexane extract of Rosa damascena have a positive effect in improving the sperm quality of rats.
