| Abstract: | It is no longer adequate to advocate for children's survival because survival alone can condemn them to a lifetime of ignorance, hardship and poverty. Today, development stands along side with the call for children's survival and protection. All children should have a fair chance to develop their god-given potential to the fullest so that, in their adult life, they are able to participate in meaningful ways in their community and contribute to nation building. The Convention on the Rights of the Children, which was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 20 November 1989 and signed and ratified by all nations of the world, provides for the survival, development, protection and participation of every child. Education, informal and formal, is the means by which children's potential can be brought to fruition. |
