Abstract: Some seven months ago at the official opening of the Second Malaysian Economic Convention, the President of the Malaysian Economic Association, in his welcome address, proposed possible areas of cocperation between government and academics in order that this could provide the basis for interaction to the mutual advantage of both groups and for the larger interest of the nation. glad that in this National Seminar your Association has been able to implement this proposal, and I should like to add my congratula- tions to both the Malaysian Economic Association and the Malaysian Centre for Development Studies for having taken the time and pain to organize this very worthwhile Seminar. I am indeed honoured to be invited to address this distinguished group of economists, planners and researchers on the subject of implications and areas for development research for our country arising from the New International Economic Order.
