Abstract: Universities at one time enjoyed the privilege of detachment from practical problems of men and society. They were secluded from political realities. Their professors would talk about theories. Their students would seek knowledge for knowledge's sake. Their numbers were small. They were patronized by the elite. ty 'Ivory Tower' was generally used to describe these universities. The word 'university' was interpreted to have originated from the word "universe", hence, the universality of the knowledge taught in the meant 'corporation'.¹ universities.
