dc.description.abstractSection 2 examines the structure of Malaysian SMIS and their relative significance in the economy. The section also compares the contribution of Malaysian SMI to that in the Philippines, Korea, Japan. Section 3 provides arguments on the potential roles SMI can play in the development of the economy in terms employment creating, saving, mobilisation, income, equalisation and fostering linkage between SMI and the Large Industries. Section 4 traces the government policy towards SMI as found in the various Plan documents. Section 5 discusses some of the major problems encountered by SMI and Section 6 examines the prospects for development of SMI and recommences some strategies towards the promotion of this sector. Section 7 provides the concluding remarks.en_US
