This paper attempts to analyse the general trend of significant recent developments in the ownership and control of commercial banks. The merchant banks and finance companies are also dealt with, in so far as they are linked in terms of ownership and control with the commercial banks. This paper, however, is not meant to be comprehensive. Neither is it meant to be an authoritative paper on the ownership and control of the banking sector. It attempts only to indicate the direction in which the banking sector is heading, and to present certain controversial and current issues regarding changes in ownership and control.en_US
