Rural landlessness and land development in Malaysia

Abstract

It is common for most of the Third World nations to be concerned with the economic and social advancement of their rural communities as they form the bulk of their respective national populations. Since most of the rural people are, directly or otherwise, dependent upon land as their main source of income, it is logical to expect the various governments to focus their attention on problems gent related to land. In this respect, it is not uncommon to find that the success, failure and popularity of such governments are often gauged by their ability to solve the land problems; to give land to the landless; and to ensure that the peasants receive a fair share of the and produce of the land. Rebellions and uprisings have often resulted if the problems of rural landlessness and poverty are inadequately resolved.
