Social skills' competence and Arabic writing achievements in Malaysian secondary schools

Abstract

This paper is based upon experimental findings by Kirembwe (2004) which investigated correlations of mean scores on Arabic writing skills and mean scores Social Skills before and after treatment. However, specific focus of this paper is on the relationship between Arabic writing skills and Social Skills before the treatment. The analysis of (r) between Arabic writing skills and Social Skills was done twice. The first analysis was meant for determining the extent to which the observable relationships would happen by chance only. While the second analysis of relationships was managed with respect to experimental conditions and yielded a large effect (r) criterion a=2, .05, ES-2.972 power.80 (Cohen, 1992). As far as experimental conditions were concerned, none of the hypothesized (r) was found significant between the means scores on Arabic writing skills and means scores on students' Social Skills. However, the results yielded an overall r =.71 which occurred by chance only between the means scores on Arabic writing skills and means scores on students' Social Skills. This (r) value indicated that students with better levels of Social Skills' application score higher on Arabic writing skills, and vice versa.
