The cognitive processing of children with reading difficulties

Abstract

The origin of developmental delay and the gap between achievement and intellectual ability is clearer to be seen by the age of 9 as young primary student. It is relevant for a research on children with difficulties in basic reading skills at the particular age. This paper discusses the cognitive processing of 50 children with English as second Language (ESL) poor readers in Gread 3. The subjects were selected from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Tun Hussein Onn. We examined the planning Attention Simultaneous Successive (PAAS) cognitive processes and the decoding, comprehension, and retention process of reading. The profiles of cognitive Assessment System (CAS) PASS scale standard score were obtained. Spearman correlation was used to indicate the relationship of cognitive processes and reading processes. The relationships of specific cognitive process with reading process with reading process were identified among children with reading difficulties. From the result an intervention was process that might help abilities of particular cognitive processing in enhancing reading processes. Furthermore, research on cognitive approach to reading remediation by PASS processing will be essential to Malaysian education planning in helping children with reading difficulties for intervention at early primary level.
