dc.description.abstract | Current research indicates that resistance training for developing (adolescent and pre-adolescent) athletic talent is not deleterious but advantageous, providing that certain safety guidelines are adhered to. This conference paper and workshop will indicate: (i) the advantages to be gained in undertaking a safe, progressive resistance-training program; (ii) an examination of the components of a resistance training program, and the methods to be employed for program planning; (iii) safety guidelines to adhere to in program planning. Early correct instruction in resistance training programs can lay the foundation for more specific and dynamic resistance movement patterns later in the athlete's sporting career. This will result in either an increase in strength, muscular endurance, speed, muscular power or a combination of these. For the non-athlete, resistance training can assist in bodily development that will aid general health and fitness. | en_US |
