The effects of various carbonization parameters on the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of carbonized Elaeis guineensis frond fiber chars had been studied experimentally. Elaeis guineensis frond fiber powder (adsorbent) with the particle size of <45 um had been carbonized at temperature from 500-900 °C with carbonization duration of 1-3 h at heating rate of 10-30°C/min and nitrogen gas flow rate of 100-500 cm³/min. Carbonization temperature, carbonization duration, heating rate and nitrogen gas flow rate and duration resulted in an increase of BET surface area of the char. The present study were found to influence the carbonization process. Increasing the carbonization temperature indicated that heating rate of 10°C/min had BET surface area of 555.53 m²/g, which was cm³/min nitrogen flow rate exhibited higher BET surface area than that at 500 cm³/min. The higher than that of heating rate of 30°C/min (398.23 m²/g). The char prepared under 100 carbonization process had effectively increased the BET surface area of the raw adsorbent by 99.35%.en_US
