In 1937 geomorphology was already a well- established element in geography In the then University of New Zealand, as it was represented by Canterbury College. It formed part, apparently the major part, of a Physical Geography course, derived from courses taught by George Jobberns in the Department of Geology and at the Christchurch Teachers' College, where a course on Physiography had been an early part of teacher training. had, however, been a necessary part of the repertoire of geologists virtually since the beginning of European settlement, and a significant number of scientific papers classified as geological were in fact geomorphological. The writings of C. A. Cotton are a case in point. It Although geomorphology as an academic discipline was then, and has largely been since, linked to geography, it is important to note that geomorphology as such is not practised solely, or even mainly, by geographers. It is a vehicle that can be very effectively used by a wide range of people. Some drivers are, of course, better trained than others. Some may prove to have a natural aptitude that overcomes poor training or even means that they become proficient with the minimum of formal training. And the vehicle may be used for a variety of purposes, not all of which may be recognised as appropriate by those working in conventional areas.en_US
