This paper will attempt to list the political characteristics of the Malacca Sultanate and discuss them, whenever applicable, in the context of their importance and relevance to the establishment of a Malay political system. The term Sultanate is used in this paper to mean an empire or a kingdom. The Malacca Sultanate held sway not only in the Malay Peninsula but also in some of the states on the east coast of Sumatra. Even the kingdom of Petani had asked for the 'nobat' from the Sultan of Malacca.en_US
