The aim of this paper is to discuss firstly the more immediate problems that arise in relation to School Certificate examinations in History and secondly to consider some of the implications of examinations in this subject at this level. Throughout, the matter is looked at from the point of view of a Chief Examiner who is concerned with the setting of the paper, with co-ordination and supervision of the marking so as to ensure that proper standards are fixed and adhered to during the marking period, and, more important, the general 'health' of the subject.en_US
