Of the extensive biographical literature in the Arabic language, only one work, namely Ibn Khallikân's "wefajjât el-ajân", has so far been translated into a European language. For this reason, it did not seem so far-fetched to me to make another work of this literary genre accessible to a larger circle of readers through a translation, although I could hardly be in any doubt that - in terms of content - the Turkish scholar's achievements are in line with the can hardly measure up to its predecessor. For two reasons: On the one hand - with a few isolated exceptions - the creative era of Mohammedan intellectual culture had long since come to a standstill, despite the political heyday of the Ottoman Empire inaugurated by the Turkish rulers. So the material covered itself could hardly offer the opportunity to attempt a representation of the career and internal development of scientific and literary personalities. On the other hand, however, it is only too obvious that Taschköprüzâde - in his (often expressed) desire not to make his work too broad - is, on the whole, far too narrow in the structure of his compilation and at the same time purely external things, i.e. the enumeration of mere data, etc., is given far too much space, instead of striving to deepen his work through a criticism of the scientific achievements of the scholars and through an aesthetic assessment of the poets and to give it an individual one in general to give character.en_US
