Abstract: | It is generally recognized that modern China's intellectual and social revolution took place after the establishment of the Republic in 1912 and not before. Although in 1911 the Hsin-hai Kê-ming had brought an end to China's old order, the revolution had been little more than political. Basically the Chinese people had not changed much in outlook and attitude; the lao-pai-hsing perhaps looked on the kê-ming as another dynastic change in which the alien Manchus were being replaced once again by the Han people. |
