Abstract: I welcome this opportunity to share with you some of the experiences we have had with programmes in oral history in Papua New Guinea . My aim is to explore briefly the importance of history and the use of oral sources in this new nation and to tell you what we have been attempting within the department of history at the University of Papua New Guinea. I hope also that, in discussing some of the issues and prospects about this programme, I might be able to share with you some insights of value to the growth of oral history programmes within this region.
