The respected author has asked me to accompany the German edition of his book with a foreword. He turned to me with this request on the basis of old personal relationships, perhaps also in memory of the fact that, at the time we became acquainted more than twenty-five years ago, I was one of the first to attempt to extract the Old Testament religion from their religions - to understand historical contexts. I believed that I could not refuse the author's friendly request, which honors me, although I have nothing to add to the recommendation that the book must and will provide itself through its subject matter and the way it is treated. The author has set himself the task of reconstructing the oldest form of religion of the Semitic inhabitants of Canaan and its neighboring countries from customs and beliefs in today's Syria and Palestine. In the field of religious history, he follows the same path that Nestor among the Arabists, J. G. Wetzstein, chose for a series of cultural-historical moments. He arrived at his final and perfect representations after a long stay in the Orient, which taught him, even now, after several decades spent among us Europeans, not only to tell stories in Arabic, but also to empathize with what was told in an Arabic sense.en_US
