| dc.description.abstract | The aim of this paper is two fold. First, to examine in what ways Malaysia can draw on the theory and practice of the modernization programs of other countries. Second, to see how Malaysia can make a potentially meaningful contribution to the emergence of a new Asian civilization. Malaysian modernization s so deeply intertwined with the West that it is difficult to discuss the former without frequent references to the latter. Its several key socio-political documents and various developmental plans are very much inspired by the ideals of the European Enlightenment. Progress so far suggests that Malaysia still has a long way to go before achieving its visionary plans. Even if it does so, can Malaysia avoid the trap and failings of modernity such as consumerism and ecological degradation? The challenge is to develop a more inspiring form of modernity that draws on the best cultural and intellectual resources of Asia and elsewhere. Would Malaysia aspire to build the longest bridge or the tallest tower? Or would it prefer to contribute to the cultural and intellectual rejuvenation of Asia? | en_US |
