dc.description.notes"We do not pretend to sketch here the history of the Muslim dialectic, a subject which moreover interests us, because it is one of the main subjects of the work of Ibn 'Aqll, who was known in his time, and among his successors, as a controversialist of the first order. Suffice it then to say here that the foundation of this science, whatever its nature, cannot be placed at such a late date as that chosen by Ibn Haldün, whether it be dialectics theologians, philosophers or jurisconsults. Already in the second half of the 3rd/9th century, Ibn ar-Rawandi had written, according to Ibn 'Aqil, a work entitled al-Gadal. Other precursor writers in this field are the Mu'tazilite al-Balbi, al-Akari and al-Maturidi, to name only these three authors of the 4th/10th century."en_US
