Description: Dementia has emerged as the public health priority worldwide resulting from the global ageing phenomena. Maintaining and improving the quality of life, cognition, independence and psychosocial well-being for older adults with dementia are the priority goals for the health care sector. This research aimed to establish the evidence of psychosocial benefits of digital technology based reminiscence work among older adults with dementia living in the community. This study involved three phases. First phase study aimed to validate the study instruments of quality of life-Alzheimer's disease (QOL-AD) (n=65), Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) (n=152) and quality of carer-patient relationship (QCPR) (n=70) into Malay language. The second phase study aimed to establish the empirical evidence of the psychosocial benefits of the Digital Memory Album (DMA) in facilitating reminiscence work with older adults with dementia. This was a preliminary randomised controlled trial with 30 participants randomly assigned to the DMA or treatment as usual (TAU) group. The DMA group received 8 individual life review sessions leading to the construction of their own digital life story displayed in DMA whereas the TAU group received standard care throughout the intervention. Third phase was a qualitative study. The objective was to develop and evaluate the usefulness of a Digital Generic Memory Album (DGMA) in facilitating reminiscence work for older adults with dementia. The developing of the DGMA contents involved both experts' (n=5) and healthy older adults' (n=21) review. The usefulness of the DGMA was explored among older adults with dementia (n=14) and caregivers (n=5). The result from phase one study confirmed that the Malay version of QOL-AD, ACE-III and QCPR were valid and reliable study instruments. Phase two finding indicated that a significant difference of time x group interaction was observed on the QOL-AD (p<0.001), ACE-III (p=0.001), participants' QCPR (p=0.014) and participants' PSS (p=0.006). Similarly a significant difference of time x group interaction was also observed on the caregivers' perspective on QCPR (p<0.001) and PSS (p=0.021). For phase three, the experts' and healthy older adults' review on the DGMA content indicated the potential use of DGMA in facilitating reminiscence work among older adults with dementia. Thematic analysis on exploring the usefulness of the DGMA among people with dementia and the caregivers showed the usefulness of the DGMA in evoking old memories accompanied by positive mood and helped in promoting the sense of self in people with dementia. It also served as an avenue which encouraged conversation and social interaction. In conclusion, this study's findings supported the application of digital technology in reminiscence work in improving the psychosocial wellbeing of people with dementia. This finding encourages the use of digital-based reminiscence work in promoting person-centred care among people with dementia and caregivers.,Doktor Falsafah (PhD)
