Description: | This study is aimed at comprehending the methodology and thought of Muhammad Quraish Shihab as found in his Quranic exegetical work named Tafsir al-Misbdh. To explain his methodology and thought, the library research method is used extensively and it becomes a major method for this type of research. The books, journals and periodicals that are directly and indirectly related to his methodology and thought are read, cited and analyzed critically and academically. Other works by other scholars on the Quranic exegesis are also studied in this study. However, the Tafsir al-Misbdk becomes the basic and primary source since this study IS focused on his methods and thoughts of the verses of the Qur'an. The emphasis in this study is on Shihab's thoughts pertaining to some social, political and economic issues like the role of women in society, the question of veil imposed on Muslim women, polygamy and usury transactions, the leadership of women in political and social settings and establishments. These issues are seen from Shihab' s perspectives as well as from Islamic juristic and legal opinions as expressed by other Muslim scholars. Other issues such as the applicability and suitability of Islamic law for the modern Muslim society as well as the concepts of Shiira, human equality and human rights are also presented in this study. In general, the Tafsir al-Misbdb retains and maintains the patterns of the classical Quranic exegesis in terms of linguistic and Islamic jurisprudence. In presenting his methodologies and thoughts regarding the social, political and economic issues, Shihab does not go far away from the traditional Muslim scholars' understandings and opinions on those issues. What makes him differ from some other Muslim scholars to some extent is his moderate and balance presentation to the Muslim commoners. In his Tafsir al-Misbdh, there are some weak and unknown prophetic traditions and Shihab does not explain the categories of those prophetic traditions. Shihab permits Muslim women to become Muslim leaders or caliphs and he explains away the prophetic traditions that prohibit Muslim women from being Muslim leaders or caliphs as due to the historical events and situations. He considers polygamy as unavoidable in some contingency and social situations, and the polygamy is not for every Muslim. He does not consider as the usury for a financial charge added to the capital sum borrowed by Muslims as long as the additional financial charges do not constitute injustice and unfairness to both parties namely the money lenders and money borrowers. Such financial transaction is considered legal in his view. Finally is his view of the veil imposed on Muslim women by some Muslim scholars. For him the veil is not one of the principal teachings of Islam since the Qur'an does not clearly mention about Muslim women's awrat. The veil for Muslim women is not obligatory but it is for the precautionary measures as well as for avoiding some human whims and temptations.,Ph. D |
