Description: Globally, Hollywood, being one of the major film producers, has been a major source of reference for the Arab and their cultures in the last century and will undoubtedly persist for years to come. The historic event of September 11, 2001 (henceforth 9/11) has intensified and further confounded Hollywood's take on the Arabs and their culture; resulting in more traditional theories such as Orientalism and Colonialism failing to capture this dramatic ideological change especially for their failure to move beyond the confined of the theorization of negative stereotype. This is the problem identified for this study. Indeed, the gap identified from this is related to the lack of previous studies focusing on post 9/11 Hollywood films, especially written from an Arab perspective i.e. the researcher. Therefore, this study examines the portrayal of Arabs as Arab (henceforth AaA) on Hollywood films post 9/11, focusing on three research objectives. First, to identify types of AaA portrayal that can be found in Hollywood films post 9/11. Second, to offer alternative readings of the portrayal of AaA by using new Orientalism. Third, to negotiate the extent to which AaA portrayal has been used to challenge Hollywood stereotypes. Seven films have been purposively selected. Textual analysis is employed in this study, and the analysis is governed by the theory of New Orientalism. From this theory, four key concepts are derived by the researcher, which are: exploitation, ambivalence, binary, and camouflage. These concepts coincide and are juxtaposed with four out of seven Alsultany's "Simplified Complex Representation" strategies. Four of Alsultany's strategies that are used in this study are; inserting patriotic Arab, sympathizing with the plight of Arab and Muslim Americans after 9/11, challenging the Arab Muslim conflation with diverse Muslim identity and flipping the enemy. The analysis showed that there are four types of AaA, which are; the exploited Arab character; the sympathized Arab character, Arab Muslim and non-Arab Muslim and the Arab victim. The findings also show that the four themes of the New Orientalism offer "against the grain" readings of Hollywood films post 9/11 by challenging Hollywood stereotypes. Finally, this research shows that AaA post 9/11 negotiates Hollywood ideology to a larger extent than pre 9/11 films, indicating AaA is a new form of Hollywood stereotype that is positive to the image of the Arabs. This study suggests an alternative reading of these characters and films. Consequently, this alternative reading helps in illuminating the ideological mechanism in which AaA portrayal is constructed through Hollywood films and their ideology,Certification of Masters / Doctoral Thesis is not available,Ph.D
