Description: | Tabanids are pests of livestock animals, they are vectors of many diseases such as surra and anaplasmosis. Considering their ability to transmit diseases, the diversity of tabanid species should be documented. In Malaysia, The Tabanidae has been studied irregularly and within larger Oriental treatments, so the knowledge is limited. This study aimed to identify the horse fly fauna of Malaysia, describe and illustrate the new species and new records, develop a dichotomus key, study the relationships between the Malaysian species based on the morphological and molecular data. Total of 1029 specimens from Center for Insect Systematics, Univirsiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (CIS-UKM) and Muzium Alam Semula jadi, Putrajaya were examined. The study recorded 60 species under five genera; Chrysops, Haematopota, Mesopangonius, Rhinomyza and Tabanus. Nine species were revealed as new viz. Chrysops idlani sp. nov., Tabanus abdulrahmani sp. nov., T. atroflavous sp. nov., T. ekor sp. nov., T. pahangensis sp. nov., T. paraflavothorax sp. nov., T. rawiae sp. nov., T. subgriseilineis sp. nov., T. zuhairi sp. nov., and 23 species were reported as new records namely C. grandis Fabricius, Haematopota cilipes Bigot, T. angustistriatus Stekhoven, T. atripilosus Stekhoven, T. atristylatus Burger, T. brunnipes Stekhoven, T. crassus Walker, T. eurytopus Burton, T. fontinalis Stekhoven, T. fuscicauda Stekhoven, T. fuscifrons Stekhoven, T. grisepalpis Stekhoven, T. inflatipalpis Stekhoven, T. konis Philip, T. latifascies Stekhoven T. megalops Walker, T. melanognathus Bigot, T. mesogaeus, Burton, T. obconicus Walker, T. rhinargus Philip, T. salvazai Surcouf, T. tonglai Surcouf, T. tristis Wulp. Males of T. latifascies Stekhoven and T. perakiensis Ricardo were thoroughly described in the current study. New species and new records were photographed and completely described, whereas species variations and remarks of the remainder species were also discussed. Moreover, dichotomous keys and distribution maps of the recorded species were provided. To evaluate the status of the current classification of the recorded species a phylogenetic analysis was done. A system of 42 morphological characters and Suraginella macalpinei as out group were used to perform Maximum Parsimony (MP) and Neighbour Joining (NJ) using PAUP*4.0b10 software. The results establish the examined genera as monophyletic groups where each genus clustered in a separate clade with 50-100% bootstrap values. In addition, the cladistic analysis resolve the relationships among the examined taxa. The relationships of 16 species of the genus Tabanus were studied using 16S ribosomal DNA and Dasyrhamphis ater as outgroup. Result of analysis based on Maximum Parsimony (MP), Neighbour Joining (NJ) and Bayesian Inference (BI) was consistent with conventional classification.
