Description: | The recent increase in the complexity of production processes and level of outsourcing has shifted the market competition among companies to new levels that not only based on financial measures but also non-financial factors as well. Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in particular, automotive is among sectors that are struggling to cope with this new changes that demand a competitive cost with a high level of customer satisfaction. The effective supply chain management (SCM) has been seen as a way to achieve oversight of materials, information, and finances as they move in a process from supplier to consumer through the manufacturer. Despite this, many SMEs are reluctant to adopt this strategy, as there are cultural barriers and doubts on whether the SCM method can be effectively implemented, or is capable of improving the company's performance, or whether it is just a waste of time and money. Therefore, the objective of this study is to identify the most effective factors of SCM Implementation (SCMI) and the barriers faced in their implementation in SME environment. In addition, this study also develops a framework that brings together these factors to guide SMEs to implement a cooperative strategy. Performance measurement system (PMS) is one of the tools used to link the monitoring process and the procedure of improvement. The study aims to develop a new PMS and continuous improvement guideline that are able to effectively enhance business performance. The study applies a methodological triangulation method that combines both qualitative and quantitative methods. A comprehensive questionnaire was developed and validated by pilot study, and a total of 238 copies were sent to top management in the automotive firm in Malaysia. Data-source triangulation was used to decrease the effect of possible biases in the collected data. Among data collected, Fifty-seven responses were applicable and selected for further analysis. Several techniques were used for the analysis including descriptive, factor analysis, multiple and hierarchical regression. In the qualitative study, several meetings were organised with SMEs and three case studies were cross-examined. This research makes several notable findings. Firstly, the investigated SMEs were still at an early stage of SCMI. The findings show that there is knowledge gap in understanding SCM and its role towards improving business process effectiveness. The second major barrier to SCMI is rooted in scepticism and cultural practices in top management which influences their decision making and attitude of employees. These emanate from lack of understanding of the new emerging technologies and operational impacts they bring. Thirdly, the environmental forecasting, business strategy, information system, customer satisfaction, and product development were the effective factors that support SCM implementation successfully. Finally, the firm's performance and SCMI were positively correlated, and significantly influenced by the key implementation factors. The study adds a substantial original data to SCM research with a significant contribution to the SCMI in automotive SMEs. The developed guidelines will help the industry practitioners and top management to identify SCM opportunities that will enhance their business performance. Decision makers can use these findings to plan the business strategy based on environmental forecasting and integrating the supplier, new technology adoption, and customer satisfaction to improve their productivity and business.,Ph.D. |
