Description: The educational system in Malaysia is moving towards global standards as the “Vision of 2020” has emphasized the importance of education and sustainability. Environmental education as the key component of sustainable development was highlighted in the national environmental policy of the country. However it does not appear as an independent subject for students. This has been a big challenge in the national sustainability program where insufficient collaboration and ineffective policy were observed in the environmental education program in schools. Moreover, this is prominent in the national philosophy of education with a knowledgeable, responsible and appreciative citizenship, such as students, in the environment. It has been interesting to find out the status of students’ environmental understanding. The current study has investigated environmental awareness, knowledge and attitude among students in selected secondary schools in Malaysia. A research instrument was developed to measure the levels of environmental awareness, knowledge and attitude based on the research objectives. The study was conducted in 9 secondary schools (out of 14) among form four students in Kajang town, Selangor, Malaysia. From the total number of 2795 students enrolled in Form Four (age 16), a sample size of 357 students was chosen. Six hundred questionnaires were distributed among respondents using simple random method with 470 returned responded. The questionnaire was pre-tested in a pilot study prior to the actual data collection for reliability and validity confirmation. Descriptive statistical technique was employed to analyze the data in the questionnaire. Independent sample t-test, One Way ANOVA and Univariet (Two Way ANOVA) were also applied. The results revealed that, awareness and attitude towards the environment are at a moderate level among respondents while knowledge is high. In addition, the result of demographic variables presented no significant differences among gender, urbanity and entertainment preferences in awareness, knowledge and attitude about the environment among students. A significant difference was observed among ethnic groups on their environmental knowledge in comparison of Malay and Indian groups. Moreover, high knowledge resulted among students in their self-efficacy about the environment. In addition, the finding represented that there were no significant interaction effects among demographic profiles on awareness, knowledge and attitude. This research concluded that the levels of parents’ education and the family income have affected the status of awareness, knowledge and attitude about environment among pupils. Interestingly, due to the result, it is revealed that teachers have influence on students’ environmental awareness, knowledge and attitude. Furthermore, the higher mean of knowledge among the Malay ethnic group in comparison to Indian, might be due to their pedagogy or the number of participants where Malay students were more than Indian in numbers. The study has also found that the high knowledge of students is affected by the high self-efficacy of knowledge among participants. The study concluded the main affective source of environmental awareness, knowledge and attitude is from media in Malaysia. Therefore the study recommends the implementation of research on the effects of the Media on environmental awareness, knowledge and attitude.,PHD
