Description: | The primary purpose of this study is to empirically examine the effects of each component of authentic leadership style demonstrated by owner-managers on the employee engagement in Malaysian small and medium budget hotels. In addressing the theoretical gaps gathered from previous literature related to potential mechanisms linking to these relationships, this study also examines the mediating effect of employees‟ positive emotion and moderating effect of employees‟ organizational-based self-esteem (OBSE). Espousing the positivist, deductive and quantitative approach, this cross-sectional study accumulated the data through a structured questionnaire survey. The data were gathered from a purposive sample of 260 full-time employees of selected Malaysian small and medium budget hotels located in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. These data were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). For the direct effect, the results show that self-awareness and balanced processing behaviors of owner-managers contribute to physical, emotion and cognitive engagement of employees in the workplace. Likewise, for the mediating effect, the results show that employees‟ positive emotion partially mediates balanced processing of owner-managers-employee engagement relationship and fully mediates relational transparency of owner-managers-employee engagement relationship. The results also show that for the moderating effect, employees‟ OBSE significantly moderates the relationship between self-awareness and balanced processing of owner-managers with employee engagement. Accordingly, these findings present empirical evidences on leader-employee relationship, particularly in the context of Malaysian small and medium budget hotels. The findings further enrich the existing knowledge by providing details on the differential effect of each authentic leadership component on employee engagement. The findings also add new knowledge to the existing literature by filling the gaps related to potential mechanisms linking to these relationships. Finally, the findings can be a useful guidance for owner-managers on how to encourage their employees to be highly engaged in their workplace. By highlighting self-awareness, relational transparency and balanced processing behaviors, owner-managers can foster employees‟ positive emotion, increase their engagement level in the organization and compensate their low self-esteem‟ employees.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available |
