Description: | An extensive study of the marine anthuroids was carried out utilizing specimens collected from the reefs of Peninsular Malaysia between August 2012 and July 2016. They were taken from 10 representative locations of Peninsular Malaysia: Port Dickson, Pulau Aur, Pulau Dayang, Pulau Langkawi, Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Payar, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Seri Buat, Pulau Tioman and Pulau Tinggi. The specimens were mainly obtained from coral reef. The coral rubble were collected into buckets with seawater. Additionally, in the coral reef of Pulau Tinggi, artificial substrate units (ASU) were also deployed and collected after a month. The samples were divided into two portions with one being used for morphological study and the other for molecular analysis. The samples for morphological study were fixed with 5% formalin while the samples for molecular analysis were placed straight into precooled absolute ethanol (0ºC) and kept in freezer. A total of 1,100 individuals of anthuroids were collected comprising 11 genera out of five families. Samples preserved in formalin were analysed and 20 species of anthuroids were described and illustrated in detail. Of these, six are new species (Pendanthura tiomanensis, P. tinggiensis, Amakusanthura tiomanensis, Eisothistos tiomanensis, Mesanthura tinggiensis and Tinggianthura alba along with the new genus Tinggianthura established to contain it) and eleven species were also recorded for the first time from Malaysia (Accalathura banardi, A. borradailei, Apanthura forceps, A. pariensis, Amakusanthura koonyumae, Expanathura corallis, Kupellonura cf. gidgee, Mesanthura quadrata, Paranthura astrolabium, P. setigera and P. seychellensis). Genomic DNA were extracted from seven species of anthuroids and the region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) genes were amplified using universal primers. Gene cloning method was applied and Phred quality score was assigned to obtain good quality barcodes. Resultantly, the seven COI barcodes (Accalathura borradailei, Apanthura forceps, Apanthura pariensis, Expanathura corralis, Mesanthura quadrata, Pendanthura tinggiensis and Tinggianthura alba) obtained are of good quality and all exceeding 630 nucleotides in length. Furthermore, the COI barcodes were compared with GeneBank database and four of them are the longest anthuroid COI barcodes reported thus far. This highlight the significant improvement of the genes when cloning method was implemented in this study. All anthuroid COI sequences were subjected to neighbour joining, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony analysis. Both neighbour joining and maximum likelihood phylogeny tree results overall suggest monophyly of anthuroids with no definitive conclusion. The maximum parsimony tree result on the other hand, presents a more reasonable evolutionary divergence pattern which is in congruence with the morphological classification of Anthuroidea. Overall, the present preliminary molecular study does not allow much for a definitive and exhaustive description of the evolutionary divergence in this group due to the limited species.
