| Description: | Smallholders represent a significant share of the global palm oil industry and a critical player in the Malaysian palm oil sector. Smallholders in Malaysia managed 40 percent of all planted areas in 2019, with 17 percent of them under independent smallholders. With increasing pressure for accountability past decades have witnessed several initiatives and policies for achieving sustainable production that accounts for the planet, people and profit. Studies on sustainability practices and impact on the livelihood of independent oil palm smallholders have not been sufficiently explored. The main objective of this research was to investigate sustainability participation of independent oil palm smallholders and its livelihoods impacts in Serian Division, Sarawak. Questionnaires were administered to the respondents to elicit information about knowledge and understanding of sustainability and impacts thereof. Participants were independent smallholders from all the districts that make up Serian Division. The total number of valid respondents was 270 smallholders. Results revealed that majority of the smallholders were not aware of major sustainability initiatives such as the Roundtable on sustainable Palm Oil and Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil. There was no significant difference in the financial security of independent smallholders in Serian based on gender as smallholders who complied with sustainability best practices were rewarded with improved finances irrespective of gender. The current livelihood conditions of independent smallholders were satisfying as a result of improved access to assets that have contributed to higher productivity. There was a significant positive association between sustainability participation and high income among independent smallholders. The research on sustainability and livelihood impacts among independent smallholders could enhance smallholders' understanding of the social and economic benefits of sustainability adoption. The finding from the research could be beneficial to researchers, policy makers, smallholders, government agencies and other stakeholders in the oil palm sector in the state in improving smallholders' sustainability participation.,Ph.D |
