Description: | The post-civil war era Eelam-Tamil film movements emerged in the late 1990s and were primarily motivated by the forced expulsion of the Eelam-Tamils from the native Eelam-Tamil homeland of Sri Lanka. The main objective of this thesis is to explore and analyse the artistic and aesthetic trajectories of Eelam-Tamil films and filmmaking system which primarily focus on the post-expulsion sentiments and experiences of the displaced Eelam-Tamil filmmakers. It specifically examines the filmic patterns and representations that reflect the Eelam-Tamil displacement using Hamid Naficy's theory of An Accented Cinema. The methodology employs the fundamental concepts that are derived from the theory of An Accented Cinema known as the filmmakers' "accent" which is demonstrated through the concepts of "preoccupation with places" and "accented filmic features" to study the existence of the Eelam-Tamils in their respective new environment. Two Eelam-Tamil films that were produced during the "War-Free" period in the native Eelam-Tamil homeland, from the year 2002 to 2009 were selected as the period saw a significant increase in the production of the internal and the external Eelam-Tamil films. Both the films come from two distinctly significant settings, that is, the diasporic homeland of Canada and the internal exilic enclosure of Sri Lanka. In both the films, the aspects of displacement of the Eelam-Tamils are analysed through the illustrations of distinct filmic temporal and spatial representations and literary devices. The study is primarily motivated by the argument that the sentiments of the Eelam-Tamil filmmakers' experiences have a strong impact on the creative process of the contemporary Eelam-Tamil filmmaking. Findings show that the employment of the concept of preoccupation with the place and the use of the accented filmic features in both the films enunciate the displacement of the post-expulsion Eelam-Tamil experience in Canada and Sri Lanka. At the same time, the study also draws attention to the Eelam-Tamil filmmakers who are lesser-known, and their accented films which have not yet seen the platform of academic discussions. The findings prove that the makers of the two films have indeed employed the concepts of the An Accented Cinema to effectively express the desire for the native homeland and the fractured experiences in the new homeland.,Ph.D. |
