Description: | Orang Asli in Tasik Chini, Malaysia is affected by frequent disaster in their environment in terms of physical, social, financial, natural and human capital. Among them, social capital is the most important for disaster preparedness of the Orang Asli families and making them disaster resilient community. This study explores the disaster experiences of the Orang Asli families in Tasik Chini and identifies their level of social capital and disaster preparedness as well as develops a linkage among them. A phenomenological research design was employed to analyse a life-world experiences of the Orang Asli families in Tasik Chini due to occurrence of flood. The data was collected using a qualitative research approach based on in-depth interview of 10 respondents from 10 Orang Asli families. The adult family members who met the inclusion criteria were chosen as respondent based on purposive sampling. All the data were analysed using thematic analysis. Based on demographic profile, the respondent consists of five male and five female aged between 23-61 years. All the respondents belong to Jakun tribe. The study shows that Orang Asli families have low monthly income at cumulative average of RM440. The findings revealed that the experiences of Orang Asli families during flood disaster in Tasik Chini were mixed where they had both positive and negative. In term of negative experiences, eight respondents out of ten claimed that their families vacate their houses and shifted to flood relief centre during flood season. Three of the Orang Asli families claimed that they faced financial losses and four Orang Asli families reported loss of assets and necessary belongings due to flood. Meanwhile, only one Orang Asli family reported to have suffered physical injury during flood. On the other hand, Orang Asli families have gained some positive experiences such as, early disaster preparedness, mutual help and the tendency to be strong and positive. In context of social capital of the Orang Asli families, the finding shows that majority of the families have good social bonding in terms of family bonding and relationship with relatives as well as neighbours. Seven respondents affirmed that mutual trust and mutual help still exist among their families. In case of disaster preparedness, this study shows that most of the interviewed families do not have the protection measures. Moreover, their participation in awareness programs and their willingness to participate in such program are found to low. However, Orang Asli families are detached from bridging and linking network because of their negative perception towards outsider. The result also indicates that social capital of the Orang Asli families are being underutilise for disaster preparedness. Therefore, this study develops a linkage among vulnerability, social capital and disaster preparedness. This demands some interventions for the Orang Asli families through the promotion of their active participation in awareness training programs, resources mobilisation, prioritizing local cultural values and community participation structure. Thus, there is need to have an inclusive disaster preparedness policy for the Orang Asli.,Ph.D |
