Description: | The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is one of the oldest conflicts in the world. Among the conflict, areas are the two major occupied territories, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. In order to maintain the occupation in these territories, Israel deploys extensive use of military means in the Gaza Strip. However, the Israeli control has been continuously challenged by Hamas, the most significant Palestinian resistance movement, whose aim is to liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation. Hamas poses a real challenge to Israel's security strategy. The purpose of this study is to analyse how Israel secures itself from threats posed by Hamas in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. The aim is translated into three objectives. The first objective examines the main strategies employed by the Israelis to secure their national security. The second objective explains Israeli security strategies towards Hamas, while the third analyses the main implementations of these security strategies. This research adopts a qualitative analysis of both primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected from interviews with policymakers and scholars in the field, as well as with the Palestinians. The findings of the study show that Israel pursues regional superiority through the use of military force. The main purpose of this strategy is to deter adversaries from gaining strength. This superiority is also reached through self-reliance and having strategic superpower ally. Occupation of Palestinian land is essentially Israeli's survival strategy. To achieve this strategy, the Israelis use assassinations, detention, tight blockade, military operations and wars, spying war and drying the sources, all aimed at keeping Hamas in-check. The Israeli security strategy against Hamas has significantly succeeded in limiting the movement's activities in the West Bank and consequently limiting its political impact in the public. However, the study also shows that in the Gaza Strip, Israel was less able to contain Hamas. This challenges the legitimacy of Israelis occupation of this territory. This difference is because, in the West Bank, Israel has a direct military occupation and active security coordination with the Palestinian Authority against Hamas. Whereas in the Gaza Strip, there is less Israeli control and Hamas still has control of this territory. The study also demonstrates that Hamas has been successful to build local, regional and international networks, in order to support its cause. This study provides in-depth insights into Israeli security and survival strategies. It will be useful for researchers and scholars working in the areas of Middle Eastern conflicts.,Ph.D. |
