| Description: | This study examined the feasibility of using short stories in the literature component in the English Language subject to teach sexuality education. Specifically, it aimed to determine the extent to which the use of short stories is effective in enhancing students' awareness on issues pertaining to sexuality. Sexuality education refers to a lifelong process of acquiring information and forming attitudes, beliefs, and values pertaining to sexuality. It encompasses sexual development, sexual and reproductive health, interpersonal relationships, affection, intimacy, body image, and gender roles. In this study, issues in sexuality education were examined from the perspective of premarital sex, abortion, gender roles and gender equality. This study used a case study design; however, both qualitative and quantitative means of data collection were employed. The respondents for the study were 37 Form 4 students from a school in Kuala Lumpur. The teaching and learning sessions consisted of five two-hour lessons on issues related to sexuality. The lessons employed the teaching strategies identifiable with reader response theory, the principles of Freud's psychoanalytic theory that emphasizes personality development, Bandura's social learning theory, and Vygotsky's sociocultural theory. The students were tested on their awareness on the sexuality issues before and after the teaching of the five short stories through a retrospective post-then-pre questionnaire. Changes in students' awareness were also gauged through reader response journal, interviews, student journals and the researcher's observation. The major findings of the study showed that studying the short stories helped the students become more aware about social problems related to sexual behaviour; issues pertaining to gender roles; the different values held by different cultures and religions about the sexuality issues and the need to express sexuality in ways that society can accept. The findings also showed that to be effective, the short stories and teaching and learning activities used should be relevant to the students' lives or the lives of their peers, linked to the personal level of their emotional maturity and provide a platform for discussion on sexuality issues in order to help them make the correct decisions based on informed choices. This research provides policymakers in the education system with practical data that exemplifies the need to consider the platform short stories can provide in teaching issues pertaining to sexuality effectively.
